Matt Sassano is redefining rock for “The Defiant”—those who refuse to let challenges or labels define them. Born with two disabilities, Cerebral Palsy and Dyscalculia, and raised in Canisteo, New York, Sassano has turned obstacles into opportunities, channeling his resilience into high-energy performances and raw, relatable lyrics. Moving to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2014 marked a turning point, setting the stage for his rise in the rock scene.
In 2021, Sassano released his "In Defiance" EP, produced by Josiah Prince of Disciple, featuring the breakout single “Not My Name,” which spent 16 weeks at number one on the CMW Christian Rock Radio charts. His follow-up singles, including “Dear God,” “Fuel,” and “Happy Family,” also spent significant time at #1, solidifying his place in the rock world.
Sassano has shared the stage with bands like Petra on their 50th anniversary tour and Seventh Day Slumber, performing coast-to-coast across the U.S. in festivals, music venues, maximum security prisons, drug recovery groups, and churches—connecting with audiences from all walks of life.
With his latest single, “Violated,” dropping October 25, 2024, Sassano continues to lead “The Defiant,” a growing group of fighters who defy the odds, proving that no label or struggle defines you—because your challenges are Not Your Name.
